It sounds like to me that you have dissimilar metal corrosion. Salt water AND fresh water can aid in corrosion. All aluminum and steel that touch needs to be seperated. Isolation of the two metals can be done with our product called ECK at www.vannay.com by coating between the metals. If as you describe corrosion has began, replacement of the items might be in order if practical. Electrical current that is naturally in the water and from a battery can accelerate the corrosion.Sacrificial anodes are also used in the boaring industry. Check the web for information. The ECK product has lot's of Zinc and sacrifices like an anode, it has an US and Canadian patent. Hope this has been helpful.
