I took a look at the photo of this device. It has nothing to do with X-rays! It is an antique quack medical device that was used as a "cure" for all kinds of ailments. The high voltage coil ionizes the gas inside the glass tube. When held against the skin the discharge was suppose to have a healing effect. I've seen many of those being auctioned on ebay, usually under the name of "Violet Ray" device.
If this was advertised as an X-ray machine, either the seller was mis-informed, or they are mis-leading potential buyers. Some of those quack devices were made by a company with the word "X-ray" in their name, so maybe that is what led the seller into believing that this is some sort of X-ray machine.
