The only standard out there is the BELLCORE standard for CLEI codes in the telecommunications industry. Each company has its own standard for the most part. Part of the reason, I'm sure , is that each manufacturer's products are of a different size, with differing amounts of "real estate" available for labels or other markings. So, each one has a different data need (# characters) to fit in the space, to give the cpi required for printing.

I'd suggest code 39 at 9.4 cpi as a standard, used by the DOD in the LOGMARS program (MIL-STD 1139 and -129K)/ also look at MIL-PRF-61002. click on www.polyonics.com/regcomp.htm for more details.

PS. Also be aware that there is a trend toward 2D barcodes for polyimide label printing, as well as 600dpi applications. In any event, close contact with your customer is the key to success!!
