That's a really good and VERY important question. It depends no who is requiring you to use the barcode..someone within your own company, or someone outside, such as WalMart, US Government, etc., and especially the retail industry. There are industry standards for the KIND of barcode to use, the format, etc.
There are mzny different kinds of barcodes, just as there are many types of languages. IF you are required to use a UPC code, because you are manufacturing products for retailers, then you must apply to the UCC (Uniform Code Council) to get a code for your company.
In many other cases, your customers might issue a ID number, part numbers, etc. which they would require you to use in non-UPC applications.
