Back in the 70's as a mechanic for the county we would pull and rebuild three automatic transmissions a week.Burnt automatic trans fluid has a putrid smell to it and I was informed that is because it is made from soybean oil.Can anyone confirm this?
Incidentally;a consulting company recommended we change our automatic trans fluid every 30,000 miles.Changing to that Preventive Maintenance cut our transmission rebuilds nearly 75%.They claimed the sevice life on the trans fluid would be reduced by half for every 10 degrees over normal operating temperature. And the police units always suffered most. That bit of knowledge convinced me of periodic transmission fluid changes.
P.S. Thank you Mr. Maynard for this informative forum!!
