I would be concerned about any sludge build-up that might be cut free by the synthetic oil. You can usually look in the the oil filler hole with a bright flashlight and see if the engine is clean. If in doubt you could follow the 1 quart, 2 quart procedure I mentioned for higher mileage cars. Another change-over procedure involves the use of an engine flush which I have also used on occasion. (It is a neat way of doing it and my customers feel comfortable with the flush procedure since it is fully supported by the synthetic oil manufacturer.)
