Mark, I have been involved in switching many cars over with no leaks as far as I know. The low mileage cars, up to 20 or 30 thousand miles, we just switch it (making sure the oil has been changed regularly up to that point). On the 80 to 120 thousand mile engines we change over more gradually. A quart the first time and then maybe 2 quarts the next time and then all synthetic. I don't recall ever switching one over after 120K. (We have 2 in the family now approaching 200K miles and still doing just fine.)
