I am fascinated by your knowledge in this area and would like your ideas. I recently purchased a 1997 Chrysler T&C minivan w/3.8l V-6 engine. The vehicle currently has 39,000 miles. My goal is to drive this vehicle for as long as I can by driving sensibly and using the correct lubes and change schedule. I live in northern Illinois where temps range from -20F to 105F. Our mileage is around 1000 miles/month and consists of frequent short trips (5-7 miles).I have been following a procedure of 3000 miles oil and filter changes, using 5W30 oil and basic Napa brand filter. Would I be better off switching to a synthetic with a better filter? Also, given this vehicles transmission record what can I do to prolong the trans life and possibly avoid what so many other Chrysler?Dodge owners have had to endure with trans failure. I have read that using any trans fluid other than Mopar in this trans is a no-no. Would you shed some light on this subject? You recommended in another posting that one should use a special air filter. Would this apply in my case? Thanks for your help.
