Camry 2000 4 cyl presently in toyo shop for rings/1 piston/bearings etc. 44k mi.;owned since new. Engine noise tapping or rapping on cold start first noticed at 25k mi.; slight increase in oil usage but within normal range. Top of engine sludged (gelled oil) heavily on teardown; Toyo denies any gelling prob but is buying the fix. Maintenance? 14 oil changes w/filters @ avg of 3125 mile interval (longest 3900 mi.). I believe the cyl head design has inadequate cooling leading to rapid oil breakdown and premature engine wear. Could be pcv problem too.
