I think you shouldn't switch to synthetic before 10,000 miles. Synthetic oil is very thin and slippery, so you might see a lot of oil consumption until you engine is nicely broken in and the seals and rings set.
There is a very small difference between synthetic and non-synthetic unless you drive your car hard. And then you should still use at least 10w-40 or higher like 15w50 (in the summer) to avoid oil consumption and reduce noise. Mobil 1 is a good choice.
